Hardwood plywood is a relatively inexpensive wood product and it offers a wide range of applications. These include furniture construction, flooring applications, paneling applications and paint and staining applications. Plywood's most significant advantage over other forms of hardwood is its excellent dimensional stability. Its compressive strength is much less than that of softwood (which is what most hardwood is derived from) and the grain structure of hardwood plywood is much less than that of softwood. These strengths allow it to be shaped into just about any shape possible with very little distortion.

The grain pattern of hardwood plywood will also tend to have a natural resistance to the growth of mold and mildew. This means that the boards of your flooring can resist moisture in the atmosphere for longer periods of time than with softwood or laminates such as MDF. The greater number and higher concentration of grain patterns in hardwood plywood give it the ability to resist moisture for a longer period of time before any signs of aging begin to show.

There are many grades of hardwood plywood  that are being sold at Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods. Most manufacturers will stock a variety of these different grades in their stock. Some are lower end models that are not suitable for use in high traffic areas or with more sensitive machinery. Higher end models of this type of hardwood plywood are generally made with a higher grade of wood and are best suited for applications where the durability and life of the item are of the highest importance. It may also be used for exotic woodworking projects due to its inherent strength and stability.

The two main hardwood grades are described as straight grain and cross grain. Most manufacturers will stock a range of both of these grades in their stock to meet the needs of their customers. Many people will choose to buy their plywood in either the cross-grain or straight grain construction, based upon the appearance and feel they are looking for in their project. These two main types of plywood have different levels of strength and density, so the buyer should be aware of what he is buying and how it will be used.

Pine is commonly used for countertops and shelving. It is an excellent choice for use in high traffic areas because of its strength and stability. Pine is one of the strongest and most durable woods available today. It is usually sold  at Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods in boards of between six to twelve inches wide. It is common to find pine being sold in twin, double, or triple-board pieces which are six by eight inches in size.

Softwood is often used for interior applications in the kitchen and bath. It is less expensive than pine, but still considered a solid wood. It is also frequently found in manufactured hardwood plywood panels. Some examples include manufactured white oak (leatherette) and manufactured bamboo.
